FAOU (Fatima Al-Fihri Open University), is a non-profit international online institute registered in Estonia as a European Digital Company. The university aims to offer high-quality, low-cost courses accessible by youth around the world, also to promote open access to scientific research and use technology to facilitate learning.

On the 11th of July, the IT department at FAOU organized a training session for the new interns to talk about slack essentials. Slack is an organized way for co-workers to connect with each other, discuss work and build a successful team relation. It was very crucial for all the interns to understand the basics of slack properly because it’s the primary tool for communication during the internship program.

The session was led by two IT officers, Khoulafa Khaoula and Brahim Benzarti in collaboration with Billy Nyongesa from the HR department. Khaoula gave a brief introduction about slack. A quick summary is as follow:

What is Slack?

Slack software is cloud-based collaboration software. Originally founded in 2009 as a chat tool for now-defunct gaming technology. It is the most convenient way to converse while working from home.

Why Slack?

The interface of the app is self-explanatory. Even it takes less than a minute explanation for most of the new users. And this works for both their web and mobile versions. Anyone can easily get started.

We can create message threads in Slack for any topic or department. Just like interns already have channels for their respective departments and extra channels like Social Club. In those threads, we can tag our team members and they’ll be notified, while it is being shown to everyone else who is a member of that thread. This is handy if we want everyone to know about something that’s going on within the team.

Demonstration

After the introduction, Brahim gave a live demonstration of the app because demonstrations improve students’ perceptions of their learning efficiency. He covered the following topic:
